The other day I took my truck loaded with yard and grass clippings to the waste transfer station (the dump) for disposal. While waiting in line at the check-in scales, I noticed that the truck in front of me had been stopped a bit longer than usual. After a period of time the girl at the check-in window came out and was trying to explain something to the driver of the vehicle. Soon she started waving her arms and holding up a plastic bottle of oil which he had in the bed of his truck. This went on for a minute or more and then she returned to her booth. After a while the truck drove on through. I was next in line so I proceeded on to check-in. I could see that the girl in the window was clearly shaken and in tears as she directed me to go on through.
I went in, emptied my load and returned to the window to check out. This time I was the only person in line so I tried to give the girl, who was still in tears, some words of comfort. I told her that despite the unwarranted actions of others, she was still number one in my book. She looked at me and managed to squeak out a soft “Thank you”.
A few days later I returned to the dump with another load of grass clippings. Finding the same girl on duty I asked her “I hope you’re feeling better about the incident with that jerk in the truck the other day”? “Yes, I’m back to normal now and thank you for your kind words.” she replied. “I’d have taken him out for you, you know” I said. We both laughed.
Life is good.
